Date of birth: 1-26-1972 Date of death: 1-16-05 Deputy Walania had been officer of the law for a total of 8 years. He was a K-9 officer in a southern Minnesota town until January 1, 2005. He started his training with St. Louis County, Minnesota January 10, 2005.

Our prayers go out to the following agencies who have recently lost officers to suicide:
Ernest Banuelos1962 - 1997 Deputy Ernest Banuelos; born in Indiana. Joined the Marine Corps in 1981, completed his recruit training at M.C.R.D. in San Diego. While serving the Marine Corps, Deputy Banuelos recieved several awards and medals to include Meritorious Unit Commedation, Good Conduct Medal (with 1 star), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 2 star), Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Mast, 3 Letters of Appreciation and a certificate of Commendation. After serving 9 years in the Marine Corps, Deputy Banuelos was honorably discharged and joined the Orange County Sheriff's Department and was assigned to the Intake Release Center and quickly gained respect by his peers and supervisors. He was always there with a joke, a laugh and a smile. His wit and enthusiasm will greatly be missed. His hard work didn't go unnoticed, he recxieved the Intake Release Center Employee of the Month and a Division Commendation as a member of the entry team during a major dis turbance. He was routinely commended for his attention to detail by the Sheriff's Identification Bureau. Deputy Banuelos leaves behind his wife of 13 years Sylvia and four children: Andrew 13, Adam 10, Justin 8 and Matthew 7.

Perry C. PurintonJuly 31, 1961-September 10, 1998 "But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace." Perry, a Brunswick native, attended one year of college before serving four years in the US Navy. He joined the Brunswick Police Department in 1986. During this time he received his bachelors degree in Human Resource Management. He was the only certified traffic accident reconstructionist on the department at the time of his death. (Perry was gifted when it came to math). He was also an emergency vehicle operator instuctor, completed the police mountain biking course, became a firearms instructor and was the first community police officer in the town of Brunswick. He was also coodinator and advisor for traffic studies and analysis. Perry had a special interest in the American Lung Association trek across Maine along with his wife, a respiratory therapist. Perry helped coordinate the safety of riders and established police presence on the trek. He coached his (step)children's youth soccer teams for 2 years and was treasurer for the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Association. Perry suffered from a genetic malady called manic depression. Sometimes the disease controlled him and his actions were contrary to the person he really was. Perry was truly a loving, supportive, gentle, sensitive person who loved life. He is intensely missed by his wife & (step)children.
John Patrick Meyers, Jr.August 7, 1966 - November 3, 1998 John Patrick Meyers, Jr. was born August 7, 1966 in Spokane, Washington died at the age of 32 on November 3, 1998 in Raytown, Missouri. John was an employee of Raytown beginning on January 21, 1996. In January 1997 he graduated from Eastern Jackson County Regional Police Academy after which he became a patrol officer. He was transferred to the Special Community Oriented Response Effort (SCORE) team in March 1998. John attended elemtary school in Madrid, Spain, high school in Council Bluffs, Iowa and college at Bellevue University in Bellvue, Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marie Meyers and survived by his father, John P. Meyers, Sr. who currently resides in Florida. John was buried in his police officers uniform in Council Bluffs, Iowa on November 9, 1998. All of his co-workers, family and friends grieve his passing.

James Francis SchabenlandNovember 24, 1949 - February 9, 1999 A devoted husband and loving father, James was born November 24, 1949 in Fresno, to Fred and Amelia Schwabenland. He attended St. John's Elementary School and San Joaquin Memorial High School, graduating in 1967. He began his studies in criminology at Fresno City College and attended and graduated from CSU Fresno with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology/Law Enforcement. He went on to receive a Master's Degree in Crimi nology from CSU Fresno in 1982. He married Jacquelyn Cayford in Fresno in 1979. He began a thirty-one year career in law enforcement with a position at Fresno City College. He began his service with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department in 1977, and accepted a position as criminologist with the Crime Lab in 1984. He was a member of the Peace Officer's Research Association of California, The Tulare County Deputy Sheriff's Association, and the Police Officer's International Association for Identification. He held numerous significant certificates in training. Most notable among these were: Advance Field Technician, Advanced Latent Fingerprint Techniques, Homicide Investigation, and Crime Scene Investigation. He also earned many professional certificates, some of which included the Advanced Peace Officer's Standards in Training Certificate and a Lifetime Instructor's Credential through California's Community Colleges. He recently successfully passed the examination for Senior Crime Scene Analyst given by the International Association for Identification. Among his interests were photography and amateur radio, and he was a radio operator for thirty-four years. Jim was also one of only six law enforcement officers in Tulare County who were recognized as experts by the Courts in fingerprint comparison. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Blake, of Visalia; his mother, Amelia Schwabenland, of Fresno; and two aunts, Nancy Knightly and Evelyn Bruno of Fresno. A Note from Jackie: "Jim was especially proud of passing the exam the month before to receive the designation of Senior Crime Scene Analyst. Only one other member of this Department has ever achieved this rank, and he is retired. The folder doesn't mention that Jim was a ballistics expert. He had very recently been accepted as a member of the Department's Bomb Squad and passed an intensive background check. Jim was scheduled to attend an F.B.I. school on bomb training slated for the week after he died. Jim always did much more than was required by the job."
Leonard T. Watterson, Jr. October 23.1956 - June 22, 1999 Patrolman Lenny Watterson was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was a Police Officer in Bourne, Massachusetts since 1983. During his 16 years with Bourne Police Department he received numerous Commendation Awards and Citations for excellent police work. He was named Officer of the Year in 1987. He earned the respect of his fellow officers and was routinely used as a training officer. He was best known for his sense of humor, compassion, willingness to help anyone, and his attention to detail. Lenny was also a loving, supportive and devoted father to his children who greatly miss him along with his family, friends and fellow officers. Lenny leaves behind a wife of 16 years, Janice, two beautiful daughters. Amber 13, and Megan 10 ; his mother, Muriel watterson; two sisters, Lisa Gregg and Dr. Lori Watterson; and several nieces and nephews.
